Before the Installer Arrives
A little preparation saves time and ensures you get the best possible installation. Here is what to do before your appointment.
Have Your Starlink Kit Accessible
If you already received your Starlink hardware, have the box ready and easily accessible. Do not leave it in a storage unit or buried in the garage. If you ordered through your installer, they will bring the equipment.
Check that all components are in the box: dish, router, cable, power supply, and base mount. Let your installer know immediately if anything is missing or appears damaged.
Know Where You Want the Router
Think about where you spend the most time online in your home. The router should go in a central location, ideally in or near the room where you use the internet most. Common choices:
Avoid basements, closets, and utility rooms. The router needs to be out in the open for good Wi-Fi coverage.
Your installer will route the cable from the dish to this location, so knowing your preference saves time and results in cleaner cable routing.
Clear the Work Area
If the dish will be mounted on your roof, clear any items stored against the house near the roofline. Move vehicles out of the driveway if the installer needs ladder access on that side.
For pole mount installations, ensure the area around the planned location is clear of debris, vehicles, and equipment.
Trim back any obvious vegetation that blocks access to the mounting area. Your installer will advise on whether additional trimming is needed for sky clearance.
Verify Power
Make sure there is a working electrical outlet near your planned router location. If you are on an off-grid power system, have your system running and charged before the appointment.
Plan to Be Home
Be present for the full installation. Your installer will want to:
Installations typically take 1 to 3 hours depending on the complexity of the mounting and cable routing.
Optional: Run the Starlink Obstruction Check
If you have the Starlink app, use the obstruction checker tool at various spots on your property before the appointment. This gives you a head start on understanding where the dish might work best. Your installer will do their own assessment, but your observations help the conversation.
What to Expect Day-Of
The installer will arrive, walk your property, and discuss the best mounting location. They will explain the plan before starting work. During installation, they will mount the dish, route the cable, set up the router, test speeds, and walk you through everything. You will have working internet before they leave.
